Bolt Rhino

I watched Bolt a few weeks back, and you know what? It’s pretty damn good.

Bolt is a genetically altered German Shepherd dog with super powers. His super-bark can wipe out an army, his super-strength can bend steel bars and his super-speed allows him to outrun the fastest of motorbikes and the speediest of helicopters. Bolt uses all his super dog powers to protect his owner, Penny, from the evil clutches of the Green-eyed Man, a bad guy with equally evil cats who are all constantly out to do, oooh, bad things to her.

At least, that’s what Bolt thinks.

In reality our canine hero has grown up as one of the main characters of a popular TV show where unbeknownst to him, all his super-powers are just clever TV special effects. It’s a bit like Buzz Lightyear trying to thwart Dr Claw (from Inspector Gadget), whilst actually being the star of The Truman Show. If that makes any sense at all.

Errr, anyway, when Bolt escapes out into the real world and ends up thousands of miles from the TV show set, he figures that his beloved Penny is in mortal danger without him and in need of his (non-existent) super-powers. There’s only one thing he can do: track her down and  save her from the Green-eyed Man. Only, how?

With the help of two unlikely new friends picked up en route – a big fat hamster called Rhino and an alley cat called Mittens, we’re set to rescue Penny. It’s all got a touch of Finding Nemo, Toy Story 1 & 2 and Road Trip about it. Sorry, did I say Road Trip? Ok, well there’s a road trip.

Ok, it’s perhaps not the most original film ever when you think about it, but that doesn’t matter. It’s Disney, but it’s near as dammit Pixar – so it’s great to look at, it’s funny, it’s sad and it’ll make you want to go out and buy a hamster. And a dog. And a cat. Oh, and possibly a pigeon.
