The Departed

Posted in Films

I try to go into any movie open minded, but I’ll level with you and admit that I had a few preconceptions about ‘The Departed’ before I’d watched it (errr, last week now - yes, I’m bit behind on the blog!).

The Departed

First of all it has Maaatt Daaa-mon, Leonardo DiCaprio and Jack Nicholson in it. I’m not really a fan of any of them - despite all three being in some quality movies in the past. Secondly, it’s a Martin Scorsese film. Don’t get me wrong, he’s also made some amazing stuff, but most of it just ain’t my bag. Thirdly, I couldn’t help but think that two and a half hours is just too long and finally, I frankly wasn’t grabbed by the trailer.

So as much as it pains me, I have to say that I actually quite enjoyed it. True, it is unnessarily long, but there is an awful lot of subtle character development and a great plot!

The ending was a total surprise to me (it helps not having seen the original), so it’s perhaps one of those films that you can’t easily watch again and again once you know what happens.

Yes, it’s 45 minutes too long (minus a point), but it’s still a fantastic story and one of the better films I’ve seen this year. 8/10.

“Maaatt Daaaamon”.
