I went to see Scott Pilgrim vs. the World the other, err, month.

Scott Pilgrim vs the World

Gratuitous Scott Pilgrim screencap.

I can’t deny that Scott Pilgrim doesn’t have a style. The film I mean, as Scott Pilgrim himself (Michael Cera) is a bit of annoying twerp to be honest. But still, if you’re a fan of Spaced, there’s a good chance you’ll get right into this.

Scott is a bit of a daydreamer and is going nowhere in life (hmmm, sounds like me). Whilst he’s dating a girl far too young for him, he meets another girl, Ramona Flowers, who he instantly falls in love with. Scott learns that in order to date the new love of his life, he has to defeat her seven evil exes who all (rather understandably I might add) want to kick his head in. I’ll leave the metaphor discussion to others who actually seem to give a crap but one by one her past loves turn up and he has to whoop their arses to win Ramona’s heart.

It’s quite funny and worth a watch, but I do find films that revolve around a set number of events (hero must complete 4 quests, find 5 objects, endure 6 points of view, defeat 7 evil exes, or whatever the plot) a teeny bit tedious sometimes. I just don’t like being reminded how much of the film is potentially left to come with ‘plot waymarkers’. Am I alone with that?
