Open Season

Posted in Films

Back in the early nineties, films started to increasingly include CGI special effects to enhance parts of the story (awful film, but think The Lawnmower Man etc). It wasn’t long after that Pixar hit us with a completely CGI’d movie. It was new ground and a lot of care was taken to make the films enjoyable for both kids and the parents alike who would inevitably be sitting through it.

For quite a while, you could watch almost any animated film, like Toy Story, Monsters Inc, Shrek or whatever and be guaranteed a good time. Pixar and Dreamworks seemed to understand that to make a really successful animated flick they’d need it to work on a few different levels.

Open Season

The trouble is, technology has moved on somewhat and nowadays it seems that anyone with a bit of money can render their own animated flick and churn it out fairly quickly. Which brings us nicely to Open Season.

Perhaps if this was released say, five years ago, it might be a different story. But there’s nothing new here. There are no big laughs (or many laughs at all actually), the script is weak and there aren’t any REALLY big personalities doing the voices to breathe life into it.

There are plenty of fluffy animals doing silly things to keep very young kids entertained and I did quite like some of the water animation, but otherwise there’s nothing of real worth if you happen to be over 4. It’s a 30 minute story stretched over 100 minutes. Not good. Watch Hoodwinked or Over The Hedge instead.

Disappointing. 4/10.
