What's B.O.B. looking at?
You know what? I’ve seen quite a few films over the years, but until last week I’d never watched a full length 3D movie. I’ve seen a couple of short things that needed those crappy red and green cardboard glasses (which quickly give you a headache), but nothing that would come close to the headache-free 3D experience that you get from watching Monsters vs Aliens. For starters, we’re not talking cheap and nasty cardboard specs here, but proper thick black rimmed glasses that were previously only available as a free hand out to Roy Orbison convention attendees.
Still aesthetics aside, they actually work and you’ll just have to take my word for it that the resulting 3D effect is frickin’ awesome. The extra ticket price is easily justified by the added enjoyment/immersion in the film. I’d be totally happy to see more 3D films and looking down the list of other films that will be released that’ll use RealD, I think it’s more than likely that I/we will.
But enough about the 3D, onto the film itself: Monsters vs Aliens…
When Susan Murphy gets hit by a meteorite on her wedding day, rather than totally flattening her, the mysterious alien rock endows her with super human strength and makes her grow taller than Jodie Kidd in heels. The US military soon turn up and Susan finds herself promptly locked away in a secret underground bunker so that the military can experiment and, oooh, leisurely probe her at will. Probably. While hidden away from the world in prison, Susan (or Ginormica as she becomes known) meets and befriends a strange bunch of other monsters who have also been captured over the years.
All of this is rather convenient, because it’s not long before an evil alien comes to Earth looking for a rare substance called Quantonium and will destroy the entire planet to find it.
Who on earth can save… Earth? Cue the monsters! You get the general idea…

Ginormica gets taken up the aisle.
Now, I realise this is all shades of wrong, but if there were an FHM 100 sexiest animated character list, Ginormica would surely have to be in the mix somewhere. Ok, she might be 49 foot 11 inches tall and have a giant cockroach and a gelatinous blob as best friends, but I think it’d be fair to assume that Ginormica would still rank pretty highly on any such future list, probably along with the likes of Leela from Futurama, Betty Rubble and of course, Jessica Rabbit. Good mornin’.
Yes, I totally know that I need to get out more, but still, there’s no denying she’s got a cracking set of pixels on her. And hey, at least I’m not the only one who thinks so.
So there you have it: Excellent 3D and great to look at. Funny. Good plot and a hot (very leggy) blonde. I can’t really fault it to be honest, I thought it was pretty damn enjoyable film.
9/10.
(By the way, would I have enjoyed Monsters vs Aliens so much if I’d watched the 2D version instead? Hmmm, I don’t know, but it certainly did earn extra points for the whole 3D-ness).

It seems that we may agree somewhat on the whole subject of this film…whether it be the film itself? How good the 3D looked? or indeed, how fit Ginormica is?
I think that says more about me & you than anything else? eh dude??
I reckon we’re both off to cartoon hell!!
So where are the pics of us all wearing our Ronnie Corbett glasses?
I do believe you’ll find at least one of those on Paul’s blog!
Been wondering whether to post the others or not…
Oh I saw a picture of a couple – who looked like they wanted “To be together”… was that he same night then…. :-)
I think I may need to take a second look at that picture later!!
3D is awesome, but I’m finding it very hard to convey to people just how awesome it was. And yeah she was hot, glad it wasn’t just me thinking so.
