"This is not a good look for me!"
I saw Date Night the other day. It might sound like a soppy rom-com, but fortunately, it’s not.
Phil and Claire Foster (Steve Carrell and Tina Fey) have been married a loooong time. The fizz has gone out of their marriage and even their weekly ‘date night’ has become a boring and predictable event.
In a bid to spice up their lives, Phil takes Claire out for dinner in the city. But when they’re unable to get a table at a posh restaurant, Phil seizes the opportunity to break from the norm, and steals someone else’s reservation. From there it’s a case of mistaken identity and the Fosters find themselves trying to retrieve a missing USB stick in a bid to stave off the bad guys.
I think if I’d actually paid to watch this film (rather than it being a free screening) I’d probably be a bit harsher. But things are always better when they’re free, right? Steve Carrell and Tina Fey are reasonably plausible as an old married couple and ok – whilst it’s kinda predictable, Date Night just about manages to turn a frown upside down. With that said… these free screenings are supposed to generate interest by word of mouth, aren’t they? So would I recommend it? Hmmm, not so much.
6.5/10.
