9 is one of those films that came and went from the cinema in the blink of an eye. So much so, that in it’s second week of release, it only had two showings, one at 11am on Saturday and the other at 11am on the Sunday. Not exactly prime time for cinema going. That’s kinda of a shame, as it’s actually a half decent strange little film.
When ’9′ comes to life, he finds himself in a desolate, war torn world. Buildings are in ruins, cars are lying abandoned and dead bodies litter the streets (yeah, not exactly Pixar!). But 9 soon runs into other err, sack toy things, just like himself. His happiness doesn’t last though, as when one of his fellow sack beings is taken by a monster, 9 learns that they’re all being hunted down. Does he run and hide with his new found group? Or does he convince them to stand and fight?
9 is impressive to look at. It’s also quite short, so everything zips along pretty quickly. If there’s a downside, it’s that the plot doesn’t allow you to get too attached to any of the characters. I also can’t help but think they missed a trick with 9 too. It just seems like it was a film crying out to be made in 3D, yet for some inexplicable reason, wasn’t. Now I realise that ultimately, 3D is a bit of a gimmick. A good storyline, good acting etc should always come first in a movie, but when some of the scenes look like they would’ve been perfectly suited to it, then why skimp on it?
7.5/10.
Anyway. If you’re interested, 9 was originally a short film that’s been extended into a full length movie (just as District 9 was a few months ago). If you want to watch the original short, you can, as it’s on Youtube… and it’s pretty good too.
